Plateletglycoprotein IV, also known as CD36 is an integral membrane glycoprotein whichhas multiple physiological functions. CD36 is broadly expressed on a wide arrayof cell types. CD36 is part of the scavenger receptor family and acts as amultiligand pattern recognition receptor which interacts with a large number ofstructurally dissimilar ligands. Furthermore, CD36 participates in lipidmetabolism and has been known as a fatty acid translocase which is required forthe bindingas well as transport of LCFA in cells & tissues. CD36 also takes a major partin the initiation as well as pathogenesis of chronic inflammatory diseases suchas Alzheimer’s disease and atherosclerosis. CD36 is an integral membraneprotein which mainly functions as a receptor for thrombospondin & collagen.CD36 directly mediates the cytoadherence of Plasmodium falciparum parasitizederythrocytes.
CD36 produced in Sf9 Insect cells is a single, glycosylated polypeptide chain containing 419 amino acids (30-439a.a.) and having a molecular mass of 47.4kDa (Molecular size on SDS-PAGE will appear at approximately 57-70kDa).CD36 is expressed with a 6 amino acid His tag at C-Terminus and purified by proprietary chromatographic techniques.
UniProt Protein Function: | CD36: Seems to have numerous potential physiological functions. Binds to collagen, thrombospondin, anionic phospholipids and oxidized LDL. May function as a cell adhesion molecule. Directly mediates cytoadherence of Plasmodium falciparum parasitized erythrocytes. Binds long chain fatty acids and may function in the transport and/or as a regulator of fatty acid transport. Receptor for thombospondins, THBS1 AND THBS2, mediating their antiangiogenic effects. Defects in CD36 are the cause of platelet glycoprotein IV deficiency (PG4D)[MIM:608404]; also known as CD36 deficiency. Platelet glycoprotein IV deficiency can be divided into 2 subgroups. The type I phenotype is characterized by platelets and monocytes/macrophages exhibiting complete CD36 deficiency. The type II phenotype lacks the surface expression of CD36 in platelets, but expression in monocytes/macrophages is near normal. Genetic variations in CD36 are associated with susceptibility to coronary heart disease type 7 (CHDS7). Belongs to the CD36 family. |
