Background: | Proteins of the matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) family are involved in the breakdown of extracellular matrix in normal physiological processes, such as embryonic development, reproduction, and tissue remodeling, as well as in disease processes, such as arthritis and metastasis. Most MMP's are secreted as inactive proproteins which are activated when cleaved by extracellular proteinases. However, the protein encoded by this gene is a member of the membrane-type MMP (MT-MMP) subfamily; each member of this subfamily contains a potential transmembrane domain suggesting that these proteins are expressed at the cell surface rather than secreted. |
Synonyms: | matrix metallopeptidase 15 (membrane-inserted) |
UniProt Protein Function: | MMP15: Endopeptidase that degrades various components of the extracellular matrix. May activate progelatinase A. Belongs to the peptidase M10A family. |
UniProt Protein Details: | Protein type:Membrane protein, integral; EC 3.4.24.-; Protease Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 16q13 Cellular Component: plasma membrane Molecular Function:enzyme activator activity; protein binding; serine-type endopeptidase activity Biological Process: collagen catabolic process; extracellular matrix disassembly; protein modification process |
NCBI Summary: | This gene encodes a member of the peptidase M10 family and membrane-type subfamily of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). Proteins in this family are involved in the breakdown of extracellular matrix in normal physiological processes, such as embryonic development, reproduction, and tissue remodeling, as well as in disease processes, such as arthritis and metastasis. Members of this subfamily contain a transmembrane domain suggesting that these proteins are expressed at the cell surface rather than secreted. The encoded preproprotein is proteolytically processed to generate the mature protease. This protein may play a role in cancer progression. [provided by RefSeq, Jan 2016] |
