Background: | This gene is a candidate colorectal tumor suppressor gene that is thought to negatively regulate cell cycle progression. The orthologous gene in the mouse expresses a phosphoprotein associated with the plasma membrane and membrane organelles, and overexpression of the mouse protein inhibits entry into S phase. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. |
Synonyms: | mutated in colorectal cancers |
UniProt Protein Function: | MCC: Candidate for the putative colorectal tumor suppressor gene located at 5q21. Suppresses cell proliferation and the Wnt/b- catenin pathway in colorectal cancer cells. Inhibits DNA binding of b-catenin/TCF/LEF transcription factors. Involved in cell migration independently of RAC1, CDC42 and p21-activated kinase (PAK) activation. Belongs to the MCC family. 2 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing. |
