SPA17 is a protein present at the cell surface. SPA17 was characterized by its participation in the binding of sperm to the zona pellucida of the oocyte. The central portion of SPA17 has carbohydrate binding motifs and likely takes part in cell-cell adhesion functions such as immune cell migration and metastasis.
SPA17 Human Recombinant produced in E. coli is a single polypeptide chain containing 174 amino acids (1-151) and having a molecular mass of 19.8kDa. SPA17 is fused to a 23 amino acid His-tag at N-terminus & purified by proprietary chromatographic techniques.
UniProt Protein Function: | SPA17: Sperm surface zona pellucida binding protein. Helps to bind spermatozoa to the zona pellucida with high affinity. Might function in binding zona pellucida and carbohydrates. |
UniProt Protein Details: | Protein type:Cancer Testis Antigen (CTA) Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 11q24.2 Cellular Component: membrane; cytoplasm Molecular Function:calmodulin binding Biological Process: binding of sperm to zona pellucida; single fertilization; spermatogenesis |
NCBI Summary: | This gene encodes a protein present at the cell surface. The N-terminus has sequence similarity to human cAMP-dependent protein kinase A (PKA) type II alpha regulatory subunit (RIIa) while the C-terminus has an IQ calmodulin-binding motif. The central portion of the protein has carbohydrate binding motifs and likely functions in cell-cell adhesion. The protein was initially characterized by its involvement in the binding of sperm to the zona pellucida of the oocyte. Recent studies indicate that it is also involved in additional cell-cell adhesion functions such as immune cell migration and metastasis. A retrotransposed pseudogene is present on chromosome 10q22.[provided by RefSeq, Jan 2009] |
