Calumenin is a calcium-binding protein located in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) of mammalian tissues which plays a role in ER functions as protein folding and sorting. Calumenin belongs to a family of multiple EF-hand proteins (CERC) that include reticulocalbin, ERC-55, and Cab45 and the product of this gene. Calumenin binds 7 calcium ions having low affinity and takes part in such ER functions as protein folding and sorting.
Recombinant Human Calumenin produced in E.Coli is a single, non-glycosylated polypeptide chain containing 317 amino acids (20-315 a.a) and having a molecular mass of 37.2 kDa. Calumenin is fused to a 20 amino acid His Tag at N-terminus and purified by proprietary chromatographic techniques.
UniProt Protein Function: | CALU: Involved in regulation of vitamin K-dependent carboxylation of multiple N-terminal glutamate residues. Seems to inhibit gamma-carboxylase GGCX. Binds 7 calcium ions with a low affinity. Belongs to the CREC family. 4 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing. |

NCBI Summary: | The product of this gene is a calcium-binding protein localized in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and it is involved in such ER functions as protein folding and sorting. This protein belongs to a family of multiple EF-hand proteins (CERC) that include reticulocalbin, ERC-55, and Cab45 and the product of this gene. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified. [provided by RefSeq, Oct 2008] |
