Background: | The protein encoded by this gene is a cytokine that acts as a regulator of a variety of hematopoietic cells. This cytokine stimulates cell proliferation and prevents apoptosis. It functions through the interleukin 9 receptor (IL9R), which activates different signal transducer and activator (STAT) proteins and thus connects this cytokine to various biological processes. The gene encoding this cytokine has been identified as a candidate gene for asthma. Genetic studies on a mouse model of asthma demonstrated that this cytokine is a determining factor in the pathogenesis of bronchial hyperresponsiveness. |
UniProt Protein Function: | IL9: Supports IL-2 independent and IL-4 independent growth of helper T-cells. Belongs to the IL-7/IL-9 family. |
UniProt Protein Details: | Protein type:Secreted; Cytokine; Secreted, signal peptide Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 5q31.1 Cellular Component: extracellular space Molecular Function:growth factor activity; interleukin-9 receptor binding; cytokine activity Biological Process: positive regulation of cell proliferation; immune response; inflammatory response; positive regulation of cell growth; positive regulation of interleukin-5 biosynthetic process |
