Background: | MTP18 (mitochondrial 18 kDa protein), also known as HSPC242, is a 166 amino acid, protein essential for cell viability. MTP18 may also have a role in maintaining the integrity of the mitochondrial network. Localized to the mitochonrion, expression of MTP18 is regulated by the PI 3-kinase pathway. Loss of function of MTP18 results in the release of cytochrome c, which subsequently activates the caspase cascade and leads to apoptosis. |
Synonyms: | mitochondrial fission process 1 |
UniProt Protein Function: | MTP18: Involved in the mitochondrial division probably by regulating membrane fission. Loss-of-function induces the release of cytochrome c, which activates the caspase cascade and leads to apoptosis. Belongs to the MTFP1 family. 2 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing. |
UniProt Protein Details: | Protein type:Mitochondrial; Membrane protein, multi-pass; Membrane protein, integral Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 22q Cellular Component: mitochondrial inner membrane; integral to membrane Biological Process: mitochondrial fission; apoptosis |
NCBI Summary: | MTP18 is a mitochondrial protein and downstream target of the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (see PIK3CA, MIM 171834) signaling pathway that plays a role in cell viability and mitochondrial dynamics (Tondera et al., 2004 [PubMed 15155745]).[supplied by OMIM, Mar 2008] |
