Background: | The product of this gene belongs to the integrin β chain family of proteins. Integrins are integral cell-surface proteins composed of an α chain and a β chain. This gene encodes the integrin β chain β 2. A given chain may combine with multiple partners resulting in different integrins. For example, β 2 combines with the α L chain to form the integrin LFA-1, and combines with the α M chain to form the integrin Mac-1. Integrins are known to participate in cell adhesion as well as cell-surface mediated signalling. Defects in this gene are the cause of leukocyte adhesion deficiency type I (LAD1). Two transcript variants encoding the same protein have been identified for this gene. |
Synonyms: | integrin, β 2 (complement component 3 receptor 3 and 4 subunit) |
UniProt Protein Function: | ITGB2: the integrin beta 2 subunit. Can combine with multiple partners resulting in different integrins. For example, beta 2 combines with the alpha L chain to form the integrin LFA-1, and combines with the alpha M chain to form the integrin Mac-1. Participates in cell adhesion as well as cell-surface mediated signaling. Defects are the cause of leukocyte adhesion deficiency type I (LAD1). |

NCBI Summary: | This gene encodes an integrin beta chain, which combines with multiple different alpha chains to form different integrin heterodimers. Integrins are integral cell-surface proteins that participate in cell adhesion as well as cell-surface mediated signalling. The encoded protein plays an important role in immune response and defects in this gene cause leukocyte adhesion deficiency. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
