PCMT1 enzyme catalyses the methyl esterification of L-isoaspartyl and D-aspartyl residues in peptides and proteins that result from spontaneous decomposition of normal L-aspartyl and L-asparaginyl residues. PCMT1 is involved in the repair and/or degradation of damaged proteins.

PCMT1 Recombinant Human produced in E.Coli is a single, non-glycosylated polypeptide chain containing 263 amino acids (1-227 a.a.) and having a molecular mass of 28.8 kDa. The PCMT1 is fused to a 36 amino acids His-Tag at N-terminus and purified by proprietary chromatographic techniques.

Belongs to the methyltransferase superfamily. L- isoaspartyl/D-aspartyl protein methyltransferase family. 2 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing.

NCBI Summary:This gene encodes a member of the type II class of protein carboxyl methyltransferase enzymes. The encoded enzyme plays a role in protein repair by recognizing and converting D-aspartyl and L-isoaspartyl residues resulting from spontaneous deamidation back to the normal L-aspartyl form. The encoded protein may play a protective role in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease, and single nucleotide polymorphisms in this gene have been associated with spina bifida and premature ovarian failure.
