Background: | The final step in heme metabolism in mammals is catalyzed by the cytosolic biliverdin reductase enzymes A and B (EC 1.3.1.24).[supplied by OMIM, Jul 2009] |
UniProt Protein Function: | BLVRB: Broad specificity oxidoreductase that catalyzes the NADPH-dependent reduction of a variety of flavins, such as riboflavin, FAD or FMN, biliverdins, methemoglobin and PQQ (pyrroloquinoline quinone). Contributes to heme catabolism and metabolizes linear tetrapyrroles. Can also reduce the complexed Fe(3+) iron to Fe(2+) in the presence of FMN and NADPH. In the liver, converts biliverdin to bilirubin. |
UniProt Protein Details: | Protein type:EC 1.5.1.30; Cofactor and Vitamin Metabolism - porphyrin and chlorophyll; Oxidoreductase; EC 1.3.1.24 Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 19q13.1-q13.2 Cellular Component: nucleoplasm; cytoplasm; plasma membrane; cytosol Molecular Function:flavin reductase activity; biliverdin reductase activity Biological Process: heme catabolic process; porphyrin metabolic process |
